Young People in the West Midlands Face Ongoing Housing Challenges as Employers Express Deep Concern

Councillors and business leaders in the West Midlands have voiced serious concerns about the persistent housing difficulties facing young people in the region. As many struggle to buy or rent their own properties, city officials are calling for targeted solutions to help this generation onto the property ladder.

The West Midlands Combined Authority’s (WMCA) Overview and Scrutiny Committee recently reviewed the challenges impacting housing development. A central focus was the WMCA’s new Spatial Development Strategy, a comprehensive, long-term plan aiming to coordinate housing growth alongside transport, energy, and social infrastructure improvements, while removing obstacles to development.

Andrew Burrow, chair of the committee, highlighted the pressing need to address housing specifically for young single people. He stressed the importance of incorporating their needs into the spatial plan and local council priorities. “I am very worried about young people and their inability to get on the housing ladder or to have a home of their own,” Burrow said. “Some families find it difficult to support young people staying at home, which can push them into unsuitable or precarious living situations.”

Rob Lamond, Head of Strategy & Analysis, explained that the spatial strategy sets the broad framework for the region, while local authorities develop detailed plans to meet specific needs. “We have data and statistics clearly outlining these demographic challenges,” Lamond said. “It’s vital we bring this information into the strategy to ensure housing plans reflect the real needs of young people in the West Midlands.”

As housing affordability and availability continue to hinder young residents, the WMCA’s coordinated approach aims to unlock development opportunities and help create a pathway to secure, independent living for the region’s youth.
