YO! Sushi at Birmingham Selfridges Urged to Enhance Hygiene Standards

YO! Sushi, a well-known seafood chain inside Birmingham’s Selfridges, has been advised to improve its food hygiene practices following a recent inspection. On 24 June, the restaurant received a rating of ‘2’ from the Food Standards Agency (FSA), indicating that improvement is necessary.

The FSA uses a rating system where scores above ‘3’ are considered a fail, with ‘3’ being generally satisfactory. Currently, YO! Sushi at Selfridges stands out as the only store within the department store to have failed a hygiene inspection as of 4 August.

During the assessment, inspectors evaluate various factors including cleanliness, food preparation, and overall hygiene management. While YO! Sushi met the standards for food safety and hygienic food handling, concerns were raised regarding the condition and cleanliness of the premises.

The specific area requiring attention involved aspects such as the layout of the premises, ventilation, availability of hand washing facilities, and measures for pest control. These are key components checked under the cleanliness and building condition category outlined by the FSA.

Aside from the Birmingham location, only one other YO! Sushi outlet, at Heathrow Airport, currently holds a failing hygiene rating among the chain’s nationwide sites.

YO! Sushi has been contacted for comment regarding the inspection results.

“While management of food safety and hygienic food handling passed the test, the cleanliness and condition of the building were listed as ‘improvement necessary’.”

The popular chain, known for its conveyor-belt sushi service and offering over 70 varieties, continues to serve customers as it works on addressing these hygiene concerns.
