X Factor Star Lucy Spraggan Receives Outpouring of Support After Facing Homophobic Abuse

Lucy Spraggan, the beloved X Factor contestant from 2012, recently faced a wave of abhorrent homophobic abuse after posting a video of her wedding on social media. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter married her wife, Emilia Smith, in a beautiful ceremony at Saltmarshe Hall, East Yorkshire, in 2025.

Having known each other for over a decade, Lucy and Emilia began dating in December 2023. Lucy’s heartfelt wedding video and a song she wrote about her wife were intended to celebrate love ahead of Valentine’s Day, but instead, she was met with deplorable comments. Many were so offensive that outlets have chosen not to publish them. Among the hateful remarks were dismissive and vulgar messages, including “How sad,” “Yuk,” and offensive references questioning their relationship.

In response, Lucy took to Instagram with resilience and grace: “I shared a song I wrote about my wife along with a video of our wedding because Valentine’s is coming. That’s all I did. These are just a few of the gross comments because I didn’t care to look any more. Thank you to everyone who sent lovely messages, you rock. Thankfully, words on the internet don’t upset me nowadays, so instead, this is just a reminder that people DO still think like this and pride IS still very important.”

Fans rallied around Lucy in the comments, condemning the abuse and celebrating love. One supporter wrote, “These comments are obviously from very sad and miserable people! Let’s pity them! Love is love! And love is beautiful!!!” Another expressed shock at the ongoing prejudice, saying, “Can’t believe even now we get so much hate just for being ourselves! Sending you all the love. Always forever proud of you. YOU are amazing!”

Others shared personal gratitude and encouragement: “You being you made a huge difference to me while I was growing up. So thank you for that,” and “Sending love and I’m so sorry you’ve had to read some of these gross messages. We love love xxxxx.” Another comment poignantly stated, “This is absolutely horrific. It blows my mind that we still exist in a world full of bigots. So sorry you’ve experienced this. You’re a beautiful, talented, kind couple—keep shining bright and never let anyone dim your light. Big hugs.”

Lucy’s experience serves as a stark reminder that despite societal progress, there remains a critical need to challenge bigotry and celebrate love in all its forms.
