Wrexham Sets the Benchmark: How Birmingham City Must Rethink Their Transfer Strategy

Last season, Birmingham City dominated the League One title race, finishing an impressive 19 points ahead of Wrexham. Fast forward to this season in the Championship, and the narrative has flipped dramatically.

Ahead of today’s highly anticipated ‘Hollywood Derby’ at St Andrew’s, Wrexham stands firmly in the promotion hunt, sitting 11 points and nine places above Birmingham City, who currently struggle in 16th place. This reversal highlights a deeper shift not just in league standings but in club strategies and squad building.

Over the past two transfer windows, both clubs invested substantially to strengthen their squads. Wrexham committed over £30 million last summer, while Birmingham City opted primarily for free agents before splurging approximately £15 million on six new signings in January. However, the key difference lies in the playing experience each club targeted.

Half of Birmingham’s 18 new signings had no prior Championship experience. In contrast, Wrexham’s 16 acquisitions brought a wealth of league knowledge, with 14 players having Championship experience. Cumulatively, Wrexham’s squad players have logged 2,696 Championship appearances, compared to just 1,685 for Birmingham.

Rich Fay, host of the Rob Ryan Red Podcast, explains Wrexham’s approach: “They focus on signing players who have proven themselves in the league they’re in or aim to be in. They mix in some Premier League experience but prioritize hard-working players with the fundamentals their manager values. It’s about spending wisely, not just big.”

This strategic recruitment has paid dividends for Wrexham, allowing them to challenge for top honors. Meanwhile, Birmingham’s manager Chris Davies acknowledges the gap in Championship experience within his squad. “We’re light on experience and game time at this level,” he concedes. “Successful teams usually have a core of players familiar with the Championship’s demands, and that’s something we need to address this summer.”

Davies emphasizes a balanced approach for future signings—valuing experienced players while remaining open to talented newcomers. “It’s about having enough Championship know-how to compete consistently,” he says.

As Birmingham City looks ahead, Wrexham’s blueprint offers valuable lessons on building a competitive squad through experience and strategic investment, signaling a likely shift in transfer policy for the Blues going forward.
