Worrying Surge in Illegal ‘Ghost Plates’ Making Drivers Invisible to Speed Cameras

An increasing number of drivers are evading speed and ANPR cameras by using illegal modifications known as “ghost plates.” This troubling trend poses a significant threat to road safety and challenges police efforts to enforce traffic laws.

Ghost plates involve altering number plates or fitting false or cloned ones, making vehicles effectively invisible to roadside cameras. This allows drivers to flout speed limits, run red lights, and perform dangerous maneuvers without the risk of being caught. More alarmingly, criminal groups exploit these tactics to evade detection and move undetected by the authorities.

The prevalence of ghost plates has surged dramatically in recent years, yet the problem often goes unnoticed by ordinary motorists, as subtle tweaks can make illegal number plates difficult to identify. Innocent vehicle owners may also suffer consequences, receiving speeding tickets or other prosecution notices for offences committed by those using cloned plates.

This illicit practice disrupts fair road use, giving dishonest drivers an unfair advantage while increasing the risk of serious accidents. In response, the government is consulting on tougher legislation, proposing harsher penalties—including fines up to £1,000 and penalty points on driving licences—to combat the growing problem.

Police chiefs and MPs, particularly in the West Midlands, have voiced strong support for stronger measures to address the issue. Motoring expert Imran Malek from DrivingExperience.com stressed the importance of maintaining legal number plates: “Number plates play a crucial role in vehicle identification on our roads, aiding law enforcement. Illegal plates undermine this system and pose serious risks. All motorists must ensure their number plates are legal, clean, and compliant with DVLA regulations. Stick to the law, and you have nothing to fear.”

As this worrying trend escalates, authorities and responsible drivers alike are calling for urgent action to restore safety and fairness on the roads.
