Wolves, Tommy Doyle, and Birmingham City’s Transfer Outlook This Summer

Tommy Doyle’s future in the West Midlands remains uncertain as the Championship season draws to a close. Currently on loan at Birmingham City from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Doyle’s move was initially set to become permanent if Blues secured promotion to the Premier League. However, with Birmingham’s recent defeat at Derby County extinguishing their play-off hopes, that scenario now seems unlikely.

Both Birmingham City and Wolves face next season in the Championship, meaning Doyle will continue competing in the same division — but whether in Royal Blue or Old Gold is still unclear. When asked about the summer ahead for Doyle, Birmingham manager Chris Davies stated, “I think it’s open. The obvious thing would be that he would go back to his parent club. We haven’t really gone that far to discuss that. That’s what I would envisage happening but you never know; a lot depends on these next six weeks.”

Before Birmingham’s loss to Derby, there was still a faint chance of making the play-offs, but that hope has now faded, and Doyle’s future is increasingly a question of who wants to secure his services next season.

Since joining Blues, Doyle gradually established himself as a key player between November and January. However, a difficult run of just three points from seven games over the festive period took a toll on both the team and Doyle’s standing. A red card against Sheffield United sidelined him for three matches, during which manager Davies began seeking a different midfield balance, craving a more physical presence.

This led to the January signing of Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis, whose impactful performances have limited Doyle’s game time. In fact, Doyle has started only once in the last ten Championship matches. Davies explained, “He’s a player I really like, but each game, we need the right balance and personnel. Solis has done well and brought competition to that position. Tommy probably wanted more minutes, but he’s been an important part of our squad and remains a core player with a strong character. Overall, he’s had a positive season.”

Despite this positive outlook, the season hasn’t unfolded as Doyle hoped. His expectation was to be a regular starter in a promotion-challenging team — achievements that remain elusive.

A return to Wolves seems the most likely destination as the summer approaches. Wolves have recently monitored Doyle closely, with assistant head coach Paul Trollope attending his full match against Middlesbrough. Head coach Rob Edwards, who will be charged with assembling a promotion-contending squad next season, has yet to see Doyle play live but will have reports to consider.

Doyle, who already boasts a promotion on his CV, remains a dependable Championship-level midfielder. While he didn’t fulfill promotion ambitions with Birmingham, he could yet be a valuable asset for Wolves as they aim to reclaim their place in the Premier League.
