Smestow School, a secondary school in Wolverhampton once regarded as one of the worst in the country, is now celebrating significant achievements following a dramatic transformation under new leadership.
The school, located in the Castlecroft area, had previously faced serious challenges, including concerns over safeguarding and student attendance. Under the previous leadership, pupil achievement was notably low, with last year’s data showing only 31% of students achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths.
Since the current leadership team took charge with the difficult task of reviving the school from its lowest point, substantial progress has been made. Earlier this year, Smestow was graded as ‘strong standard’ in three areas and ‘expected standard’ in four others, marking a considerable improvement from its previous ‘inadequate’ rating.

Exam results have reflected this positive trend: the percentage of pupils achieving grade 5 or higher in English and maths rose significantly to 47% this year, nearly half of the students. Additionally, the Attainment 8 score, which measures average academic performance across multiple subjects, increased from 42.5 to 48.4.
Headteacher Ian Chamberlain expressed pride in the school’s progress, highlighting the dedication of both pupils and staff. He said, “Prior to my arrival, pupils did not achieve well. We are thoroughly delighted with the outcomes for our Year 11 pupils. The results are a credit to the magnificent hard work of the pupils and the superb scholarly culture within the cohort. We are extremely grateful for the commitment of our staff and the support of families. Our results truly exemplify our school motto of ‘success achieved together’ – this is a shared success.”
