When Storm Goretti Will Hit Birmingham: Five Essential Preparations for Families

The Met Office has issued an amber snow warning for Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, with Storm Goretti expected to arrive on Thursday evening, January 8. Families are being advised to take five important steps to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

Snowfall of 10 to 15cm is forecast across the affected amber alert area, which also covers parts of northern England and Wales. According to WX Charts, using MetDesk data, snow could begin falling in Birmingham around 6pm tomorrow, peaking around 9pm and continuing until 6am on Friday.

  1. Prepare Your Vehicle
Drivers should allow extra travel time and check essential car equipment, including windscreen wipers, tyres, and screenwash. It’s also vital to pack emergency supplies such as an in-car phone charger, warm clothing, blankets, high-visibility jackets, jump leads, an empty fuel can, food, drink, a shovel, and warning triangles.

  2. Drive Cautiously
Use dipped headlights, accelerate gently, and if possible, start in second gear to reduce wheel slip. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, keep a steady speed when ascending hills, and use low gear to descend safely.

  3. Prepare for Potential Isolation
The Met Office warns that heavy snow could isolate homes, potentially cutting off access to food, heat, and light for several days. Households are encouraged to stock up on essential supplies including torches, batteries, candles, matches or lighters, blankets, and warm clothing.

  4. Keep Your Home Safe
If snow cuts off your property, take steps to ensure household safety. Keep emergency supplies accessible and monitor weather updates closely, as conditions may change rapidly.

  5. Stay Informed and Be Ready
Weather warnings can evolve quickly during storms. Stay updated through reliable sources and be prepared to adapt plans accordingly to ensure safety.

By following these guidelines, families in Birmingham and across the West Midlands can better protect themselves and their homes as Storm Goretti approaches.
