Diwali, known as the ‘festival of lights’, is a joyful celebration observed across the globe. It is marked by the illumination of homes, shops and community spaces with candles and traditional lamps called ‘diyas’.
The festival spans five days and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists. Its dates vary each year because the Hindu calendar is moon-based, but Diwali always takes place in the autumn, usually between October and November. This timing coincides with earlier, darker evenings in the UK.
In 2026, the main day of Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November. This is the third day of the festival, recognised as the darkest day of the month and typically aligns with the new moon.

Diwali symbolises new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The customs followed can differ by region, blending elements from harvest festivals.
Central to the celebrations are prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, prosperity and wealth, and Ganesh, the god of good fortune and wisdom. On Diwali night, devotees offer prayers to these deities, followed by presenting sweet treats and lighting numerous diyas both inside and outside their homes. The glowing lamps are believed to attract Lakshmi’s attention, inviting blessings and prosperity for the year ahead.
Other traditional practices include thoroughly cleaning and decorating homes, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts, enjoying fireworks displays, and sharing festive meals with family and friends.
Birmingham Diwali Mela The tenth annual Birmingham Diwali Mela will be held on Soho Road on Sunday 25 October, from 12 noon until 7.30pm. This vibrant event celebrates the festival with colourful performances and cultural activities.
Festival of Light at Black Country Living Museum On Saturday 7 November from 6pm, the Dudley museum will host an immersive outdoor evening event featuring captivating sights, sounds and family-friendly cultural activities to mark the festival of lights.
Diwali Gala On Saturday 31 October from 4pm to 9pm at The Conference Suite in West Bromwich, a family-friendly indoor gala will feature an unlimited vegetarian buffet, live Bollywood and bhangra DJ sets, cultural performances, a Mehendi artist and a children’s zone with a bouncy castle.
