In 2024, Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre revealed a clear trend: shoppers are willing to queue, sometimes overnight, to be among the first through the doors of new store openings. This enthusiasm carried strongly into 2025, with packed lines forming for every major new arrival in Birmingham city centre.
Among the standout openings this year was Space NK, making its debut in the former AllSaints space on the Bullring’s top floor. Miniso launched its second city centre store in the old Scotts unit near Selfridges on the ground floor. Meanwhile, Uniqlo unveiled a flagship branch in the former Zara location just outside the Bullring, and Bath and Body Works opened on the Bullring’s East Mall middle floor. Over at Grand Central, Sostrene Grene opened its first city centre shop, relocating from inside the Bullring.
Each of these openings attracted eager crowds, with queues stretching out the door and sometimes hundreds of shoppers waiting patiently. But what truly set their launches apart was a shared tactic that drew such large numbers: the giveaway of goodie bags to early customers.

Mirroring the enthusiasm seen during Sephora’s launch, these stores enticed shoppers with mystery freebies and exclusive gifts. Space NK handed out 500 ‘bumper’ goodie bags filled with skincare and makeup products, with even larger gifts for shoppers who spent over £100. Miniso also offered 500 goodie bags packed with their popular collectibles and toys.
Uniqlo rewarded the first 100 visitors with special goodie bags, while Bath and Body Works reserved 50 bags for eager customers. Sostrene Grene gifted their first 100 customers with a voucher redeemable later for a stylish, neutral-toned rug, encouraging shoppers to return.
This giveaway trend is setting a new standard in Birmingham’s retail scene and is expected to continue into 2026. For example, SushiDog, opening in January, plans to offer a free item to its first 100 customers. The upcoming launch of Victoria’s Secret will also be highly anticipated as it returns to the Bullring with a larger store.
As Birmingham’s retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that freebie incentives are a powerful draw for shoppers keen to be part of the excitement.
