What Chris Davies Told Stansfield as Priske Begins Summer Mission at Birmingham City

Birmingham City climbed into the Championship’s top 10 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Preston North End on Wednesday night. The Blues now lead a tightly packed group of clubs battling between 10th and 17th place, extending their strong run to seven points from the last nine available.

The game burst into life early, with Jay Stansfield and Ibrahim Osman scoring within the first 16 minutes before Andrew Hughes pulled one back for Preston. Osman’s performance was particularly eye-catching, showcasing the pace and skill of a Premier League winger. He created and finished moments of brilliance that thrilled over 23,000 fans at St Andrew’s.

Unfortunately, Osman had to leave the match with a head injury, and if concussion protocols are triggered, he may miss Birmingham’s final home game against Bristol City this Saturday. Osman’s impact this season has been remarkable, making him a fan favorite and someone Chris Davies is keen to see return next season. At 21 years old, Osman is attracting interest from several clubs, but a loan move from Brighton could be the most viable option financially given his £16 million price tag.

While finishing 10th wasn’t an initial goal for Birmingham City this season, the position will be a welcome achievement — representing their best league finish since 2011/12. With just a few points needed to surpass previous totals, Davies is eager to build on the team’s newfound grit and determination, which was evident in their recent performances.

“This was a display of heart and soul,” said Davies after the Preston game. “It wasn’t just about scoring goals but about fight, teamwork, and resilience — the true essence of sport.”

On the tactical side, the right flank has been a challenge all season, seeing six different combinations. Early in the year, Tomoki Iwata linked well with Patrick Roberts, while since January, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Carlos Vicente have formed the most effective partnership. On Wednesday, the choice to start Ethan Laird alongside Vicente led to overlapping problems, as both players tended to occupy the same spaces rather than complementing each other’s movement.

Laird may be the club’s best right-back on paper, but he has yet to develop the chemistry needed with his attacking counterparts to claim the spot as a regular starter this season.

Jay Stansfield finally ended a 13-game goal drought with a clever finish, redirecting a cross-shot from Osman past Preston’s keeper Daniel Iversen. While his season stats of 10 goals and seven assists remain impressive, the recent goal gap has been a concern. Davies remains confident in Stansfield’s ability and work ethic, telling the striker recently not to worry about the drought and praising his elite mentality.

“I know he’ll score when the chances come,” Davies said. “He consistently earns his place because of his hard work and focus. His goal was a great example of his sharp instincts.”

Looking ahead, young centre-back August Priske’s summer will be crucial for his development. Although he has yet to find the net, Priske’s aerial presence has added a new dimension to Birmingham’s style. Two goal-bound efforts were blocked by Preston defenders, highlighting his threat but also the need to improve his finishing speed.

Comparisons can be made to Che Adams’ progress in 2018, when a transformative summer led to a breakout season the following year. Priske’s talent is clear, and with focused physical preparation to match the physical demands of English football, he has every chance to grow into a Championship force.

The end of this season marks a new chapter of refinement and ambition for Birmingham City, with key players like Osman, Stansfield, and Priske positioned to make significant strides under the guidance of coach Chris Davies.
