Wetherspoons, a popular pub chain with locations across the UK, including Birmingham, has announced it will be removing its classic Mixed Grill dish from all menus nationwide. This decision comes after numerous customer complaints and difficulties in consistently meeting expectations, particularly regarding the steak component of the meal.
The Mixed Grill traditionally features sausages, gammon, steak, a choice of chicken or pork, egg, mushroom, tomato, chips, and onion rings. However, Sir Tim Martin, Wetherspoons’ chairman, explained that the main issue was the steak. “There’s no two people in the UK who agree what a medium steak is, so orders were frequently returned, causing us significant frustration,” he said. Due to these challenges, Wetherspoons opted to simplify their menu, focusing on dishes they can execute consistently well. “It’s still a pretty big menu,” Martin added.
The pub chain is also grappling with substantial cost increases. Sir Tim Martin revealed on Times Radio that in the past year, rising expenses have hit them hard, adding approximately £1.2 million per week in additional costs, totaling around £60 million annually. “It’s a very challenging cost environment for pubs,” he stated clearly.

Amid these operational difficulties, political voices have weighed in on the economic climate affecting businesses. Shadow Conservative Party chancellor Sir Mel Stride criticized Labour’s policies, claiming they are “costing Britain jobs.” Stride emphasized that “punishing employers” ultimately hurts the workforce.
On the other hand, Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves expressed optimism about the future. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, she remarked to Sky News that businesses are feeling positive about the year ahead thanks to their economic plan aimed at fostering growth and prosperity across the UK.
In summary, Wetherspoons’ removal of the Mixed Grill reflects broader challenges facing the hospitality industry, including menu management and rising operational costs in a complex economic environment.
