Walsall has been identified as one of the worst towns in the country when it comes to the hygiene ratings of its restaurants, shops and takeaways. According to a recent report by High Speed Training, the Black Country town shares the joint-lowest average cleanliness score across the UK, highlighting troubling food hygiene issues.
Food establishments in Walsall received an overall average rating of 4.03 out of 5, the lowest along with Bolton. While many local food businesses maintain good hygiene standards, the presence of several with poor ratings has brought down the overall average, indicating that some venues have serious health concerns.
Food outlets are routinely inspected by environmental health officers to ensure that the food served is safe for consumption and prepared under clean conditions. These inspections result in hygiene ratings from zero to five, with lower scores signalling significant problems.

The data reveals that hygiene issues are not confined to Walsall alone but affect the wider West Midlands region. Four of the six areas with the poorest average food hygiene scores are located in the West Midlands. Birmingham and West Bromwich share the joint-fourth lowest position with an average rating of 4.16, followed by Dudley at 4.22.
Conversely, Shrewsbury and Telford boast some of the highest food hygiene ratings in the Midlands, both averaging a score of 4.74.
Additional analysis by BirminghamLive has shown that numerous food establishments persist with zero-star ratings for extended periods, sometimes months or even years. As these ratings are not always publicly displayed, customers are advised to check hygiene scores before ordering, especially when using delivery apps, where the origins and standards of food outlets may be less familiar.
Consumers can easily find hygiene ratings for any town or city by searching online for ‘food hygiene ratings’, ensuring they make informed choices about where to eat or order from.
