Recent surveys reveal how passengers rate train services across the West Midlands, offering insights into punctuality, value for money, and overall satisfaction. The data, collected by the independent watchdog Transport Focus in December 2025, highlights the strengths and weaknesses of various rail operators serving the region.
West Midlands Railway tops the overall satisfaction chart with an impressive 90% approval rating from passengers. It achieved a notable 84% for punctuality, demonstrating reliable service timing. However, the operator’s value for money rating lags behind, with only 61% of passengers feeling they receive good financial value for their journeys.
Following closely, Transport for Wales earned an 88% overall satisfaction score, along with a stronger 70% rating for value for money and 82% for punctuality. Avanti Railways also performed well, scoring 87% overall satisfaction, but struggled with value for money at just 55%, although it matched Transport for Wales with an 82% punctuality rating.

Chiltern Railways reported an 85% satisfaction level, 55% for value, and 86% punctuality, while London Northwestern Railway achieved 83% overall satisfaction and a commendable 85% for punctuality. However, its value for money rating was low at 54%. Cross Country Trains rounded out the results with 82% for both overall satisfaction and punctuality, and 56% for value.
In addition to these key metrics, the survey also evaluated personal safety and cleanliness. Avanti received the highest mark for personal safety on trains at 92%, with Transport for Wales close behind at 91%. The other operators scored between 85% and 88% in this category. When it comes to train cleanliness, Avanti again led with 88%, followed by West Midlands Railway at 84%, Transport for Wales at 81%, and others ranging from 73% to 79%.
These findings will be discussed further during the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Transport Delivery Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, March 9.
