New data from West Midlands Police (WMP) has revealed that motorists have repeatedly been caught travelling at speeds exceeding 120mph on the region’s motorways within the past 12 months.
WMP provided information detailing the top 10 highest speeds recorded across the force area, all of which occurred on motorway stretches and involved speeds surpassing the 120mph mark. The data was disclosed following a Freedom of Information request by BirminghamLive.
Notably, a section of the M6 northbound, between Junction 4 near Coleshill and Junction 9 near Wednesbury, was prominent in the list with four recorded offences involving speeds of 126mph, 133mph, 134mph and 137mph. This included the three highest speeds recorded in the entire dataset.

The area between Junction 7 at Great Barr and Junction 8, where the M6 meets the M5 interchange, appeared twice, with a BMW and a Porsche among the vehicles detected by speed cameras exceeding 120mph.
Overall, the M6 was the motorway most frequently associated with extreme speeding, accounting for six of the top 10 recorded instances. The M42 also featured twice, with drivers caught travelling at 131mph on the northbound carriageway between Junction 3a (Umberslade Interchange) and Junction 5 (Copt Hill). In both cases, speed cameras were responsible for detecting the offences.
Similarly, the M5 appeared twice on the list, with motorists clocked by police officers near Junction 1, West Bromwich and between Junction 2, Oldbury and Junction 3, Quinton.
While the data provides details of speeds, locations, vehicle makes and how the drivers were caught, it is not clear from the information released what penalties or consequences these drivers faced.
