West Midlands Metro Fare Increases and Changes Coming in 2026

Travel on the West Midlands Metro will become more expensive in 2026, as Midland Metro Limited (MML) has received approval from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Board to raise fares. Single ticket prices will increase by up to 50p, while season tickets will see a 10% rise.

This fare revision is deemed essential to cover rising operating expenses and to fund key projects, including the new Black Country line to Dudley and the extension into Birmingham’s Eastside.

Despite the price hikes, the Metro is simultaneously introducing significant improvements. A new ‘buy before you board’ policy will require passengers to purchase tickets prior to boarding or to use the newly installed ‘Tap-in and Tap-out’ contactless payment system at all tram stops. This modernization effort aims to streamline boarding and reduce delays.

Concessionary fare holders — including older adults, disabled individuals, and young people — will not face any price increases.

Additionally, the penalty fare for traveling without a valid ticket will rise sharply from £10 to £100 in 2026, bringing enforcement in line with other UK transport networks.

These changes represent a balancing act between maintaining affordability for passengers and ensuring the financial health and future growth of the West Midlands Metro.
