West Midlands Landlord Reflects on Unique Upbringing at Historic Family Pub

Gary Meads’ story is one unlike most – born and raised within the walls of a pub he now owns. The Coach & Horses Inn, situated on the border of Alvechurch and Birmingham, has been a family-run establishment for over half a century, tracing its roots back to 1787.

Legend has it that JRR Tolkien, the famed author of The Lord of the Rings, once frequented the pub, reputedly writing by the bar. Though this claim isn’t officially confirmed by the Tolkien Society, it adds a rich layer of lore to the historic venue.

Gary’s parents took over the Coach & Horses in 1968, and he was born a year later. Growing up within a pub environment gave him a childhood filled with community, activity, and lifelong memories.

“Life growing up was brilliant,” Gary shared with BirminghamLive. “My friends loved the fact my parents owned a pub. I was good at handing out Vimto’s and crisps in my younger days. Though I was too young to play darts, I got to chalk the board, which surprisingly helped with my multiplication.”

Living in a bustling pub meant Gary was always surrounded by people, leaving little room for introversion. He fondly recalls the festive atmosphere during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations as exceptionally magical.

His parents’ dedication to the pub has been unwavering for over 50 years. “My parents have lived and breathed this place. We’re still serving amazing ales and home-cooked food,” he said. His father still pitches in, even as he approaches his 89th birthday in February – a testament to his passion and lifelong commitment.

The Coach & Horses Inn, located on Weatheroak Hill, Alvechurch (B48 7EA), remains a beloved local landmark, where tradition and community continue to thrive.
