West Midlands Indian Restaurant Owner Weighs Future Amid Declining Footfall

Madras Eatery, an Indian restaurant that opened last August on Bearwood High Street, is facing uncertain times just months into its launch. Owner Arun Rajan, known for his innovative cutlery-free dining experience, has expressed concerns over the recent steep decline in customer visits.

Arun describes the current situation as “unbelievable,” noting the stark drop in footfall inside the restaurant. As rising operational costs loom, expected to impact the hospitality sector starting in April, he is seriously reconsidering the future of his business.

“I hardly see people dining in the restaurant at the moment,” Arun shared with BirminghamLive. “It feels like people are spending less, preferring cheaper options like pizzas and burgers.”

Unlike fast-food chains that rely on frozen ingredients, Madras Eatery prides itself on fresh daily deliveries and authentic preparation. Arun recognizes the difficulty competing against fast food but remains committed to quality.

Looking ahead, Arun admits that changes may be necessary. “After April, with all the price increases, I need to figure out how to cope. I might need to rethink the business model,” he said.

One option on the table is converting Madras Eatery from a traditional sit-down restaurant into a takeaway or a more casual eat-in spot where customers can stand while eating. Although reluctant, Arun understands the realities of the market.

“It’s not something I want to do because I am passionate about hospitality and serving individuals,” he explained. “But at the same time, I can’t ignore the costs. I don’t want to compromise quality, but I might need to explore other options.”

Situated at 607A Bearwood Road, Bearwood, Madras Eatery continues to hope for a turnaround as challenging times lie ahead.
