We Explored Birmingham’s Winson Green—Known for the Worst Parking, and the Reality Is Shocking

Finding the absolute worst parking in Birmingham is no easy feat—poor parking habits seem to plague nearly every street. Yet, Winson Green has earned a notorious reputation that may just top them all.

Local would-be councillor Shuranjeet Singh recently shared a video exposing a disturbing spread of parking violations in just one corner of this inner-city area. His footage paints a chaotic picture: cars hanging halfway off pavements, vehicles parked smack in the middle of the road, and some even parked on the wrong side of the street. Amid the chaos, a handful of parking tickets were visible, but they did little to restore order.

Shuranjeet rightly highlighted the dangers these parked cars pose—an ambulance, emergency services, or even regular traffic would struggle to navigate these crowded roads.

We took a trip to Winson Green, an area perhaps better known for the nearby HMP Birmingham prison, and found the parking nightmares captured on video were very real. This isn’t just frustrating; it’s hazardous.

The situation for pedestrians is alarming. Pavements are frequently blocked, forcing mothers with pushchairs and pedestrians alike onto the road. Rather than a leisurely walk, negotiating these streets becomes an obstacle course—sidestepping outstretched wing mirrors, squeezing between brick walls and parked vehicles, and constantly dodging road traffic.

A particularly striking moment was watching a woman with a pushchair confronted by a van that had completely mounted the pavement. With no safe path left, she had no choice but to carefully step down onto the road and continue along the edge, weaving between passing cars.

What stood out most wasn’t just the volume of parking violations, but the blasé acceptance of the situation by locals. People walked around parked cars on pavements as if it were normal. A man walking his dog casually detoured around a vehicle blocking the pavement without missing a beat in conversation.

The reality is that Winson Green’s terrible parking habits have sadly become part of the area’s rhythm. Pavements are treated as extra parking space, roads are cluttered with poorly parked vehicles, and pedestrians must simply adapt or take their chances in the street.

It’s a stark reminder that without better enforcement and community awareness, these unsafe conditions will remain the norm for Winson Green’s residents and visitors alike.
