Warning Issued as Fraudsters Target Homes in Black Country with Same Distraction Tactic

Police have issued a serious warning following a spate of distraction burglaries targeting elderly residents in the Black Country. Between February 12 and 18, three fraudsters gained entry to homes in Sandwell, particularly in West Bromwich, by pretending to be water board or gas company workers.

These criminals employed the same deceptive tactic in each case, claiming there was an issue with the water or gas supply. While one offender engaged the victim with this false explanation, the others stole cash from the home. In two known instances, cash was successfully taken, while a third target confronted the intruders, preventing any theft.

West Midlands Police emphasized that the so-called water board no longer exists and urged residents to demand official identification from unexpected visitors. Officers reminded the community to remain vigilant, especially when it comes to safeguarding elderly family members and neighbors from bogus callers.
