Warning for McAfee Customers About Renewal Email Scam

McAfee antivirus users are being targeted by a widespread email scam that falsely claims their subscription is about to expire. These fraudulent emails urge recipients to renew immediately by offering an enticing “89% discount” if payment is made the same day, warning that their computers will be vulnerable to viruses once the expiration date passes.

However, McAfee has confirmed that these emails are fake. A company spokesperson emphasized, “McAfee will never ask you to call a phone number in an email or text. If you receive a subscription or renewal notice, we recommend logging directly into McAfee.com to verify your subscription and renewal status. Cybercriminals often use counterfeit notifications to trick people.”

The scam emails often contain alarming messages such as, “Your devices could be at risk. Get antivirus protection now,” and promises like “100% virus removal guarantee or your money back.” Additionally, they may include malicious links disguised as unsubscribe options or other calls to action designed to lead victims to fake websites where personal or financial information can be stolen.

McAfee’s official website warns users about phishing—a technique where cybercriminals mimic legitimate communications to steal sensitive data. They advise caution: don’t click on links or open attachments in suspicious emails. Doing so could install malware on your device.

To help users identify fraudulent emails, McAfee suggests carefully reviewing any communication claiming to be from them, and forwarding suspicious messages to [email protected] for investigation. Note that after forwarding, you may receive an automatic response from [email protected].

Stay vigilant and always verify any renewal notifications directly through official McAfee channels to protect your personal information and devices.
