Walsall Van Driver Receives Six-Month Ban and Points for Speeding on M4 Motorway

A van driver from Walsall has been disqualified from driving for six months and received three penalty points on his licence for exceeding a temporary motorway speed limit.

Eric Oppong, 50, was caught driving a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at 57mph on the M4 motorway, where a 50mph restriction was in place between junction 18 and junction 19 in Gloucestershire. The incident occurred on 6 September last year.

Oppong admitted to breaching the local traffic order by driving over the temporary speed limit. Following a hearing at Walsall Magistrates' Court, he was ordered to pay a £123 fine, £85 in court costs, and a £49 victim surcharge.

The prosecution was brought by Avon and Somerset Police on 27 July. Oppong, who resides on Jenner Road in Walsall, was also driving a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 315 Progressive CDI at the time of the offence.

“Drivers must adhere to temporary speed limits for their safety and the safety of others,” a representative from Avon and Somerset Police commented following the case.

The court’s decision serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of exceeding speed restrictions on motorways, particularly where temporary limits are implemented due to roadworks or other hazards.
