The recently appointed leader of Walsall Council, Councillor Elaine Williams, has expressed shock and dismay after discovering the Civic Centre’s former One Stop Shop area has been stripped of all fixtures and fittings. Once a busy front desk for residents seeking council services, the space now lies empty and vandalised.
Since closing during the pandemic, the area has seen the removal of furniture, air conditioning units, flooring, ceiling tiles, and exposed electrical wiring hanging visibly throughout. This stark state has left many questioning the council’s handling of the premises.
During the election campaign last month, Reform UK pledged to reopen the Civic Centre to provide accessible public services once again. Councillor Williams explained reopening would have required just minor cosmetic work and relocating staff, if the building were still intact. Instead, she was “horrified” to find the space completely gutted.

She stated, “It looks like downstairs has been vandalised, and it’s absolutely shocking. This building belongs to the residents of Walsall, and no one was consulted about this. We thought the area was preserved, but seeing it now as a bare shell with wires hanging down is heartbreaking.”
Following the closure of the Civic Centre, Walsall Council has launched 29 Connected Centres throughout the borough to allow residents to access council services. However, the demand for reopening the Civic Centre persists.
In September 2025, former Blakenall councillor Pete Smith urged the council either to reopen the One Stop Shop or sell the building and reinvest the proceeds elsewhere.
Looking ahead, at the full council meeting scheduled for Monday, June 22, Councillor Khizar Hussain, deputy leader of Walsall Community Independents, plans to question Reform UK leaders on their intentions for the Civic Centre site.
Walsall Council has declined to comment, noting that the issue will be discussed during next week’s meeting.
