Walsall Council Approves Former Midland Hotel Conversion into 14-Bed Homeless Shelter

Walsall Council has greenlit plans to transform the former Midland Hotel on Station Street into a 14-bed house of multiple occupation (HMO) dedicated to helping homeless people in the borough. The council acquired the building in May 2025 and intends to offer temporary accommodation for single homeless individuals, providing crucial support until longer-term housing solutions are available.

Elise Hopkins, Walsall’s Director for Housing and Engagement, highlighted that repurposing the hotel will free up family-suitable homes, addressing a critical housing need in the area. This move helps alleviate pressure on council housing resources and reduces reliance on costly paid accommodations outside the borough.

The application had originally been approved in January but was mistakenly labelled as retrospective, prompting a re-examination by the planning committee on April 23. Councillor Mike Bird, Council Leader and planning committee chairman, revealed that the council currently spends approximately £3.7 million on bed and breakfast expenses due to the shortage of council-owned emergency accommodation.

Councillor Stacie Elson inquired whether the facility would also house asylum seekers. Elise Hopkins clarified that the HMO will exclusively serve homeless individuals from Walsall and not those seeking asylum.

The application received unanimous support, with Councillor Mark Statham emphasizing the moral imperative to assist vulnerable residents, stating, “It’s never wrong to do what’s right.”
