A peri-peri takeaway in Caldmore, Merigo on West Bromwich Street, is seeking approval from Walsall Council’s licensing and safety committee to extend its operating hours until 3 a.m. every night of the week. The decision is scheduled for Thursday, June 4.
The proposal has sparked strong opposition from the Palfrey and Caldmore Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Group, led by vice chairman Mohamed, who has formally objected to the late-night hours. Mohamed emphasized the significant impact such extended hours would have on residents living in adjacent and upstairs flats.
He expressed concerns about increased noise levels, antisocial behaviour from customers, litter, unpleasant odours, and traffic congestion. Mohamed warned, “The proximity of residential flats means that late-night commercial activity risks severely disrupting the quality of life for local residents. Customers loitering outside or eating in parked vehicles could cause ongoing disturbances.”

He added that such operating hours are unsuitable in a tightly packed residential area and would almost certainly lead to heightened disturbances that the community cannot tolerate.
In response, Adrian Tworkowski, director of MG Walsall Ltd, which owns Merigo, described the venture as a family-friendly establishment. He assured the council and the public that staff would actively ensure customers leave quietly and promptly after closing.
Tworkowski explained, “Merigo is dedicated to celebrating peri-peri grilled cuisine in a welcoming environment where food lovers can socialize and enjoy themselves responsibly.” He emphasized the outlet’s commitment to balancing business ambitions with respect for the surrounding community.
The council’s decision will determine whether Merigo can extend its hours, weighing Merigo’s vision against the community’s right to peaceful living.
