A 19-year-old driver, Zain Mohammad, has been disqualified from driving after crashing into a lamppost within a Birmingham city centre car park while reportedly inhaling nitrous oxide.
On April 20, security guards at Millennium Point Car Park found Mohammad seated inside a Volkswagen Golf Type R on the top floor. The vehicle showed significant front-end damage after colliding with a lamppost. According to prosecuting solicitor Shajah Javed at Birmingham Magistrates Court, Mohammad was observed inhaling nitrous oxide from a balloon at the scene.
Upon police arrival, Mohammad admitted to driving without insurance and was promptly arrested. During the hearing, defence solicitor Ian Vessey explained that Mohammad had previously passed his driving test but was not fully aware that his license had been revoked. Mohammad stated that a bright light momentarily blinded him just before the crash and insisted he did not flee the scene.

Mohammad, who resides in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, works in the care sector attending to both young and elderly clients. He acknowledged knowing he cannot drive legally and that his employer is aware of this. Vessey noted Mohammad relies on taxis or alternative transport to get to work.
At the hearing on May 19, Mohammad pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and driving without a license. Deputy District Judge Olwen Davis acknowledged his young age and immaturity, reducing fines accordingly. Mohammad was fined £80 for the driving offences and an additional £80 for the nitrous oxide-related charge. He also received a six-month driving disqualification, was ordered to pay £80 in prosecution costs, and a £40 victim surcharge.
