Volunteers Collect Over 1,000 Laughing Gas Canisters in Birmingham’s Moseley

The issue of discarded nitrous oxide—or ‘laughing gas’—canisters has surged in Moseley, a suburb of Birmingham, with the number of discarded canisters more than doubling in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Councillor Izzy Knowles, representing Moseley, brought attention to the growing problem during the West Midlands Police and Crime Panel meeting. She shared data gathered by the Moseley Litterbusters, a local group committed to cleaning up the area. In 2025, the group collected 1,118 large nitrous oxide canisters from streets, compared to 476 collected in 2024.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, acknowledged the issue remains a concern despite fewer recent reports. He confirmed the force is developing a West Midlands-wide anti-social behaviour action plan, which will include measures to tackle nitrous oxide misuse.

Councillor Knowles emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that nitrous oxide is now classified as a Class C drug. She expressed concern over both the growing presence of canisters—ranging from small to increasingly large sizes—and their prevalence in areas frequented by young people, some of whom may be driving under the influence.

Commissioner Foster highlighted the multiple risks posed by nitrous oxide use, including public health hazards, road safety dangers, and contributions to anti-social behaviour. He remarked on the recent decline in public attention toward the problem but stressed that the issue itself has not diminished.

Both officials agreed on the importance of addressing nitrous oxide misuse as part of broader community safety efforts. The upcoming anti-social behaviour action plan, due by the end of March, will specifically incorporate strategies to combat this rising concern.
