Violent Disorder Outside Birmingham Club Leads to Police Assault and Temporary Closure

A major disturbance erupted outside the King of Clubs in Birmingham city centre when more than 100 individuals armed themselves with glass bottles and other items, hurling them at police officers. The incident occurred on John Bright Street at around 10:30 pm on Saturday, May 23, as clubgoers began to disperse.

West Midlands Police reported the large-scale violent disorder involving a mob using various objects as weapons against officers. Superintendent Karl Thomas expressed serious concerns about the club’s ability to uphold licensing regulations, highlighting previous incidents requiring police intervention. Despite efforts to collaborate with the venue, the situation escalated, prompting police to request an expedited review of the club’s license.

On Thursday, May 28, Birmingham City Council’s licensing sub-committee convened to discuss the matter in a closed session due to an ongoing criminal investigation. The club’s designated premises supervisor, Angele Nelson, and security agency representative, Ollie Amidipe, attended but stated they had no prior knowledge of the incident. Following the private deliberations, the committee suspended the club’s premises license, effectively closing it pending a full review within 28 days.
