Residents of Meriden in Solihull have voiced strong opposition to a proposal to install advertising boards on a key village roundabout. Locals argue that the signs could distract drivers and negatively impact the village’s character.
The plan, submitted by Steve Green of CP Media in September, proposes four advertising boards on the roundabout where Hampton Lane, Main Road, Birmingham Road, and Fillongley Road meet. Each board would measure 1.2 meters by 50 centimeters and be mounted on aluminium posts, remaining in place until 2030 if approved.
While the applicant notes that the signs are part of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s existing roundabout sponsorship program and claims the boards will face entrances without conflicting with highway furniture, the proposal has faced significant pushback.

During a summer consultation, 22 residents, including representatives from Meriden Parish Council, submitted objections. Their concerns primarily revolve around potential distractions to motorists and the overall impact on local aesthetics.
Ahead of the planning committee’s upcoming decision, council officers have prepared a report emphasizing that advertisement applications are evaluated mainly on their effect on public safety and community amenity. Officials acknowledge that while the roundabout lies near several heritage sites and just outside the Meriden conservation area, the proposed signage is unlikely to cause harm.
Highway engineers have reviewed the proposal and raised no safety objections. The officers concluded that the advertisements will not adversely affect public or highway safety and recommend granting permission with conditions.
The planning committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, at 6 pm in the Civic Suite and is open to the public. The session will also be live-streamed on solihull.gov.uk. Details of the application can be viewed online by searching for application PL/2025/00999/ADV on the Solihull Council planning portal.
