Vet Identifies Five Dog Breeds Most Vulnerable to UK Heatwave

As the UK endures its third heatwave this summer, pet owners should be aware that some dog breeds are more susceptible to heatstroke than others. Veterinary Operations Director at Pharmacy2U Pet Health, Phil Younger, highlights key factors affecting how dogs cope with heat, including breed, age, coat type, health, and activity levels.

Younger has identified five dog breeds most at risk of heat stress. Flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus are particularly vulnerable due to their shorter snouts, which impair their ability to pant effectively. Energetic dogs like Border Collies and Spaniels also require special attention in warm weather because their high activity levels can increase heat generation.

Recognizing the signs of overheating is crucial for dog owners. Warning symptoms include excessive panting, heavy drooling, lethargy, vomiting, confusion, and even collapsing. Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat across their bodies but cool down primarily through panting and sweat glands in their paws. However, high temperatures combined with humidity reduce the effectiveness of panting, significantly raising the risk of heatstroke.

The Met Office forecasts that from July 18 to July 27, the UK will experience predominantly dry conditions with somewhat cooler air from the North Atlantic, although temperatures will remain above average. Towards the end of July, increasing chances of rain and thunderstorms may bring some relief. From July 28 to August 11, weather patterns could be more changeable, with periods of rain interspersed with drier, warmer spells, maintaining the risk of hot weather.

With the summer heat continuing, it is vital for dog owners to take extra precautions, especially for breeds that struggle in the heat, ensuring they stay hydrated, receive plenty of shade, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
