Veterinarians are urging pet owners to avoid using e-cigarettes indoors due to growing evidence linking vaping to a range of health problems in pets. Exposure to vape aerosols can lead to nausea, excessive drooling, skin irritations, allergic reactions, eye issues, heart conditions, respiratory distress, and even cancer.
Cats are particularly vulnerable to asthma and may accidentally self-poison by grooming the residue left on their fur. Dogs often develop bronchitis from inhaling vape particles. Small animals and birds are also at increased risk, as their sensitive respiratory systems react poorly to airborne irritants.
Dr. Catherine Burke of PDSA cautions owners to watch for symptoms such as coughing, labored breathing, or changes in respiratory patterns and to seek veterinary care if they arise. She explains, “Nicotine is highly toxic to animals, and the chemicals in vape vapors can irritate their delicate airways. There is potential for cancer risks as well.”
Dr. Burke also highlights the dangers of pets ingesting vaping products, including liquids and batteries, which can cause poisoning or severe internal injuries. She advises, “Keep vaping devices and liquids securely stored away from pets. Never discard cartridges where animals can access them.”
Research published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice reviewed over 300 cases of dogs exposed to vape products between 2011 and 2024. While many animals exhibited mild symptoms, some suffered serious poisoning, including fatalities.
Dr. Katharine Nelson from the Royal Veterinary College adds, “At our animal hospital, we frequently treat pets with breathing problems triggered or worsened by airborne irritants. Birds and small mammals are especially sensitive to poor air quality.”
To protect pets, veterinarians recommend vaping exclusively outdoors, maintaining well-ventilated homes, and restricting pets' access to rooms where vaping has occurred. Proper storage of vaping devices and accessories away from curious animals is essential.
By minimizing indoor vaping and taking precautions, pet owners can safeguard their furry and feathered companions from the harmful effects of e-cigarette exposure.
