‘Usable’ plea over new cycle route on Birmingham road safety blackspot

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Investment Board has given the green light to the second phase of the A45 Coventry Road Cycle Route project, with an investment of £12.8 million. This next phase aims to improve cycling infrastructure along a notoriously dangerous stretch of Birmingham road, which has been identified as a safety blackspot for cyclists.

Local campaigners have welcomed the approval but emphasised the importance of the new cycle route being practical and ‘usable’ to ensure it effectively enhances safety and encourages more people to cycle. They are calling for careful planning and design that prioritises cyclists' needs, ensuring the route is not only safe but also convenient and accessible for everyday journeys.

The project forms part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable transport options and reduce road casualties in the region. Officials have stated that the upgraded cycle route will provide a vital connection for commuters and recreational cyclists alike, helping to make cycling a safer and more attractive choice on one of Birmingham’s busiest roads.
