Unai Emery Responds Briefly After Viral Incident with Youri Tielemans in Fenerbahce Victory

During Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph over Fenerbahce, an intense moment unfolded between manager Unai Emery and midfielder Youri Tielemans that quickly went viral. After substituting Tielemans late in the match, Emery pushed and shouted at the player instead of offering a handshake, sparking widespread attention.

Jadon Sancho scored the decisive goal with a powerful header, securing a 1-0 win for Villa. Despite several chances to double their lead— including a blocked shot off the line—Villa held strong defensively to claim all three points. The result elevated them into the top two of their Europa League group, capitalizing on FC Midtjylland’s draw with Brann.

The post-match footage revealed Tielemans extending his hand towards Emery as he left the pitch, only for Emery to shove him away and shout. When asked about this incident during the press conference, Emery gave a succinct response: “He is like my son.”

Beyond the incident, Emery expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and progress in the tournament. “I am so, so happy today. I am happy with how we competed and achieved three points. We respect this competition and are earning important points,” he said.

Emery acknowledged ongoing challenges with squad composition but remained optimistic about future reinforcements. “We have one last week to complete the structure of our squad, then we will focus entirely on upcoming matches—including Sunday’s league game and Thursday’s Europa League fixture against Salzburg. After the transfer window closes, we can fully concentrate on the Premier League, Europa League, and FA Cup,” he added.
