Unai Emery celebrated a significant milestone on Thursday night, securing his 100th victory as Aston Villa’s manager with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Lille. However, the achievement was quickly set aside as Emery emphasized the importance of their upcoming Premier League encounter with Manchester United.
The narrow victory in Lille strengthens Villa’s position to advance in the Europa League quarter-finals. Yet, with only one victory in their last seven home fixtures, Emery acknowledges that nothing comes easily in this demanding phase of the season.
“Respect is my key message to the players,” Emery stated during his post-match press conference. “Respect for the Europa League and the quality of teams competing. Tonight was an evenly matched game, but by staying organized and dominating possession to create chances, we earned the win.”

Emery highlighted the team’s resilience, mentioning the challenges faced by English clubs in European competitions. “We prepared for the difficulties ahead and maintained our defensive structure, whether that was a medium or low block. It’s only 1-0 after 90 minutes. In the last round, Lille lost 1-0 but managed a comeback, so we remain cautious for the second leg.”
When asked about reaching his 100th win at Villa, Emery was focused on the future rather than past accolades. “That milestone is behind us. My goal now is Sunday—preparing thoroughly to face Manchester United. I hold myself and the team to high standards. Mistakes happen, but they are opportunities to learn and grow for both myself and the players.”
Emery praised the support from the 2,500 Villa fans present and reiterated the challenge that comes with European competition. “It’s fantastic to have such support. We must be demanding of ourselves because this tournament is tough. Only one team progresses, and consistency is essential in every match.”
Balancing their ambitions in both the Europa League and Premier League, Emery described March as a pivotal month for Villa. “This is a critical stage of the season. The Manchester United match on Sunday demands our full focus and commitment.”
