Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery has expressed satisfaction with Leon Bailey’s dedication since the winger rejoined the club last month but insists that Bailey must begin to translate his efforts into tangible results.
Bailey’s loan spell at AS Roma was hampered by fitness issues, leading to limited playtime. Consequently, he was recalled by Villa, a move that came somewhat unexpectedly as the club initially intended for Bailey to continue gaining experience in Italy. This development saw Evann Guessand loaned out to Crystal Palace with an option to buy.
Ahead of Villa’s Premier League clash with Leeds United, Emery elaborated on the decision to bring Bailey back. “He loves football and he loves it here,” Emery remarked. “When he left us previously, he was exploring different opportunities—in Germany and Italy—but he was missing something during his time here with us. Bringing him back wasn’t our initial plan, but circumstances changed, and now he is fully committed to Aston Villa.”

“Leon wanted to return, be part of our squad, train with us, and face new challenges. His goal is to regain his best form, confidence, and comfort with the team. I’m very pleased with how he’s responded daily,” he added.
Since his return, Bailey has made appearances in Villa’s last four league matches and started in the FA Cup game against Newcastle United, where he was substituted following a red card against teammate Marco Bizot.
When asked about areas for improvement, Emery was clear: “I want him to add measurable value by scoring goals, providing assists, and fulfilling tactical responsibilities. We are all committed to working hard each day, and it’s vital for the club and the team that players contribute both collectively and individually.”
Emery emphasized the importance of leveraging Bailey’s strengths: “Our structure depends on exploiting his qualities to help us secure more points through goals, assists, and consistent effort. While some players may get varying minutes, everyone must be ready to support the team whenever called upon.”
With the Premier League campaign in full swing, Emery’s message to Bailey is unequivocal: show your commitment through performance and help Villa achieve their ambitions.
