Unai Emery Holds Both Aston Villa and Liverpool Accountable for Harvey Elliott’s Challenging Loan Spell

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has openly acknowledged that both Aston Villa and Liverpool share responsibility for the limited playing time Harvey Elliott has experienced during his loan spell this season.

The young midfielder, 23, has featured for just 110 minutes in Premier League action this term as a result of contractual nuances and strategic decisions by both clubs. Early in the season, Emery opted not to pursue a permanent transfer for Elliott, who was loaned from Liverpool. According to the terms of the deal, Villa would have had to pay a £35 million transfer fee if Elliott reached 10 Premier League appearances — a threshold Emery was reluctant to approach.

The situation was further complicated during the winter transfer window. Villa sought to renegotiate the arrangement to a straightforward loan, enabling more flexible use of Elliott in matches. However, Liverpool declined to amend the agreement, influenced in part by Villa’s emergence as direct competitors for European qualification places. With Liverpool’s title challenge beginning to fade, their priority shifted towards securing a top-five finish, and restricting Elliott’s appearances appeared to serve both clubs’ interests.

Despite the challenges and a largely frustrating campaign for Elliott, Emery praised the midfielder’s professionalism and attitude throughout the ordeal. “I always spoke with him honestly,” Emery said. “He’s a fantastic guy, and his respect for me and the team has been outstanding. Hopefully, he continues his career and fulfills his potential because he truly deserves it.”

Elliott is set to return to Liverpool this summer after a difficult term with Villa. Emery reflected on his own record against Liverpool, noting he has yet to secure a Premier League victory over them, with four draws and six losses in ten meetings. A win this weekend would not only mark a milestone but also clinch Champions League qualification for Villa ahead of their Europa League final against SC Freiburg.

Emery emphasized the significance of the upcoming match: “Liverpool are an exceptional team, and competing against them is a challenge. Securing Champions League football remains our top priority, and the Premier League match is crucial for that objective.”

He further addressed team selection concerns in light of the looming final: “The Premier League remains the priority because it offers a direct path to Champions League qualification. We have a 50 percent chance of winning the title, and that fuels our ambition to compete at the highest level next season.”

As the pressure builds, Emery remains optimistic about Villa’s progress and their ability to challenge established powerhouses like Liverpool.
