Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery is defiantly optimistic as his side sits proudly in third place in the Premier League, with just 12 matches left in the season. Despite some recent setbacks, Emery insists that Villa’s strong league position is no surprise to him, even if it has flown under many people’s radar.
Villa currently trail league leaders Arsenal by just five points, a gap they can narrow with a victory over Leeds United this Saturday. Although Villa have only won two of their last six league games, they maintain a healthy eight-point cushion inside the top five — a testament to their resilience and the struggles of their rivals to capitalize on Villa’s slip-ups.
Recent successes, including a hard-fought win against Brighton, have renewed hopes of Villa achieving back-to-back home victories for the first time since their record-breaking 11-match home win streak was halted by Everton in January. Emery acknowledges the high standards set by top teams but remains focused on his squad’s immediate challenges.

“To be in this position at game 27? That doesn’t surprise me, although it may surprise others,” Emery stated proudly. “I’m proud of where we are. There are seven teams still fighting all around us. Our challenge now is to maintain this position and keep winning.”
He emphasizes his obsession with the next game against Leeds United, preparing his players for every physical and mental challenge they will face on home soil. “We must play with our personality for the full 90 minutes, backed by our passionate supporters at Villa Park,” he said.
Emery also praised the incredible performances of Arsenal and Manchester City. “Arsenal are playing with fantastic energy and dominance, even in matches where they don’t get the result. Manchester City’s consistency and mentality over a 38-game season is impressive. We share that mindset — never relaxing, never giving up, always striving to reach the next level.”
Villa’s progress over the past three years, Emery explained, comes from continuous player improvement and growth. However, he recognizes that their top rivals are also evolving, making the Premier League battle fierce. “Arsenal are getting stronger every year, edging closer to the title. City is unrelenting in their consistency. We are working hard to stay competitive and break through to the highest levels we’ve ever reached.”
As the Premier League race intensifies, Emery’s determination and belief in his team fuel Villa’s ambition to close the gap on the leaders and secure a spot in Europe’s elite competitions once again.
