Unai Emery Downplays Aston Villa’s Title Hopes Despite Winning Streak

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has made it clear that he does not believe his team is in the running for the Premier League title, despite their impressive form. After securing an eighth consecutive league victory at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, Villa are showcasing their best winning streak in over a century.

This current run marks Villa’s longest sequence of consecutive top-flight wins since they recorded nine straight victories between October and December 1910. Extending beyond the Premier League, their 11-game winning streak in all competitions matches club records dating back to September 1897 and March 1914.

In the match against Chelsea, Ollie Watkins came off the bench just before the hour to spark a dramatic turnaround, exemplifying Villa’s resilience as all five of their away league wins this season have come after trailing in games.

Emery praised his team’s mentality and structure, highlighting how they have built a competitive spirit since a worrying start to the season in August and September. “We didn’t watch the table,” Emery explained, “we focused on each match. By strengthening our structure and demanding high standards of responsibility and maturity, our team is growing.”

The manager credited the first half defensive effort and the impact of substitutes for their comeback, pointing out the tactical discipline and fresh energy that turned the game in their favor.

However, when asked directly about Aston Villa’s status in the title race, Emery was frank. “Not really. I am not feeling it, but we are competing very well. Manchester City and Arsenal are phenomenal teams. We still have 38 matches to play, and there’s also Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United to consider.”

His message was clear: Villa will keep pushing for consistency and compete fiercely but acknowledge the challenge posed by the dominant contenders ahead of them.
