Unai Emery Blames Excitement and Loss of Composure for Aston Villa’s Defeat at Manchester United

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has candidly addressed the reasons behind his team’s defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, emphasizing how a lapse in composure following Ross Barkley’s equaliser proved costly.

Barkley, making his first league start in 435 days, brought Villa level just after the hour mark, following Casemiro’s opener for United early in the second half. However, despite moments of promise—including a significant chance missed by Tammy Abraham—Villa failed to maintain control.

After Abraham’s missed opportunity, winger Leon Bailey lost possession in the attacking third, allowing Manchester United to launch a swift counter-attack that led to the decisive second goal. Later, Benjamin Sesko sealed Villa’s fate with a third strike in the 81st minute, ending Villa’s hopes of claiming points against their fellow Champions League contenders.

Reflecting on the match and the season, Emery commented, “It’s still in our hands. When we were going through a strong run, we were confident and difficult to beat. Now, during a tougher patch, we must maintain balance, and that’s what we are striving for.”

Emery noted the team’s recent positive momentum, citing their strong performance on Thursday in Lille and certain promising aspects against Manchester United. Still, he admits more is needed to overcome top sides. “We competed well but it wasn’t enough. The Premier League is a marathon with 38 games, and overall our position is fantastic — even better than we expected at the start.”

He acknowledged the fierce competition around them, with Manchester United now ahead, Liverpool close behind, and Chelsea still within reach. “We must improve and strengthen our performances in these crucial moments,” Emery said.

On the match itself, Emery praised Villa’s first-half performance, highlighting their competitiveness and occasional dominance. However, he admitted a loss of control in the second half ultimately cost them. “United scored from a set-piece, and although we responded well after, emotional moments got the better of us. After equalizing, excitement led to mistakes, including losing possession that allowed them to score again.”

Despite the setback, Emery remains confident about the team’s progress and motivation. “We are recovering confidence and working hard on our structure. The players are feeling better, and I am very motivated. The challenges ahead are exciting, and there’s plenty of football left to play this season.”

He concluded by emphasizing the lessons learned from the experience: “We are building through moments like these. Our aim is to control games through discipline and positioning, and we will keep pushing to maintain that.”
