UK Tourists Face £700 Fine for Carrying Vapes in Thailand After Travel Rule Update

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Thailand, discouraging all but essential travel to certain areas amid strict new regulations. Thailand remains a popular destination for British tourists, but recent legal changes have impacted those carrying vaping products and cannabis.

On March 17, the FCDO revised its guidance concerning smoking, e-cigarettes, and cannabis use. The updated advice highlights that smoking is illegal in public places, and possession or use of vaping devices—including e-cigarettes, pods, e-liquid, and heat-not-burn products—is strictly prohibited.

Violations can result in severe penalties, including confiscation of devices, heavy fines ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 Thai baht (approximately £700), detention, and legal proceedings. The FCDO stresses there are no exemptions for tourists or personal use; offenders may be required to remain in Thailand until their case is resolved.

British nationals have also been arrested for carrying cannabis, including incidents occurring during international airport transits. Enhanced security measures and advanced detection technology at airports worldwide increase the risk of interception.

Smoking bans in Thailand extend beyond indoor public spaces and workplaces to include various outdoor locations such as sports venues, public parks, amusement parks, playgrounds, and markets. Additionally, tobacco advertising and promotion face comprehensive restrictions, with few exceptions.

Sales of tobacco products are prohibited through vending machines, online platforms, and within schools, playgrounds, and healthcare facilities, reinforcing Thailand’s strict stance on tobacco and related products.

Tourists are strongly advised to comply with these regulations to avoid hefty fines and potential legal troubles while travelling in Thailand.
