This year, the UK is set to launch a major change in driving licences with the widespread introduction of digital ID for millions of drivers. Labour Party Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has praised this innovation as a “game changer” for those who use their driving licence as a form of identification.
The digital driving licence initiative was first announced in January last year as part of the new GOV.UK App. The Labour Party has now confirmed that a full rollout will take place later this year, making digital licences broadly accessible across the country.
Ms Alexander emphasized that the new technology will revolutionize how millions verify their identity, making everyday tasks simpler and more secure. Peter Kyle, then Science Secretary, explained that the GOV.UK Wallet will enable people to receive government-issued letters and identity documents virtually. This technology will streamline processes like proving eligibility for benefits or verifying age for purchasing restricted items, offering enhanced security and control over personal data.

The rollout will also prioritize veterans, as Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns DSO OBE MC MP, announced that former service personnel will be the first to access the GOV.UK digital wallet. By accessing their HM Armed Forces Veteran Card via smartphone, veterans will find it easier to confirm their status and obtain entitled benefits, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting those who serve.
Additionally, drivers within the European Union are expected to benefit from similar digital licence features soon. The EU has stated that these advancements will simplify licence replacement, renewal, and exchange for drivers moving between member states. While an exact timeline remains pending, member states will begin implementing these features following a brief transitional period.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, remarked that this initiative marks significant progress in modernizing driver licensing systems and aims to reduce the EU’s road fatalities.
