UK to Experience First Mini-Heatwave of the Year with Temperatures Reaching 24C

The UK is set to enjoy its first mini-heatwave of 2024, with temperatures soaring up to 24C (75F). This warm spell, expected from Saturday, April 6, through Monday, April 8, marks the hottest start to April in six years.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office describes the conditions as “unusually warm” for this time of year. Normally, early April temperatures hover around 15C (59F), but the upcoming southerly winds and clear skies will push the mercury well above average. Dewhurst notes that the last comparable stretch of warm weather was in 2020, when Cornwall reached 26C (78.8F).

The mini-heatwave is poised to peak on Sunday, April 7, with mid-20s temperatures across England and Wales. By Thursday, April 9, conditions will cool as wind patterns shift, bringing more changeable weather and intermittent rain.

Over the weekend, cooler conditions will return to northern regions with highs around 10C (50F), while the South remains mild at about 14C (57F). The Met Office forecasts mostly dry and sunny weather, with some cloud and rain possible across Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

Wednesday, April 8, will continue to feature abundant sunshine and warm temperatures in England and Wales, while northern areas may experience cloudier skies but remain mostly dry.

This brief rise in temperature offers a welcome early taste of summer warmth after the cooler start to spring, but residents should prepare for a return to more typical seasonal weather later in the week.
