Iceland supermarket has expressed shock and disappointment after receiving a legal warning from the Football Association (FA) regarding its World Cup display supporting England. The major retailer, with stores in Birmingham and other locations, was instructed to remove its promotional displays featuring the England football team.
The supermarket had renamed its stores in Washington, Chingford, and Stourbridge to “England” as part of a marketing campaign celebrating the team’s recent success. This move coincided with England’s thrilling 6-4 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff, a match that had fans nationwide buzzing.
However, the FA issued a cease and desist order, citing concerns that the public might mistakenly believe Iceland had a commercial partnership with the football governing body. An Iceland spokesperson said, “We are shocked and deeply disappointed that, at a time when the nation was rallying behind England, the FA chose legal action instead of joining in the celebration.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the store renaming was a tribute to hometown heroes Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Jordan Pickford, aimed solely at supporting the national team and engaging customers ahead of one of the most significant matches in recent memory.
The supermarket also criticized the timing of the FA’s warning, noting that if England had advanced to the final, the order would have forced them to remove displays and halt celebrations at a critical moment for fans across the country. “It’s difficult to understand why, just as the nation was uniting behind England, we were being told to take everything down,” the spokesperson added.
The weekend’s dramatic match saw Bukayo Saka score a hat-trick, helping England secure their best men’s World Cup finish since 1966 and igniting national pride. Despite this, Iceland and its customers are left questioning the FA’s decision to take such a firm legal stance during a moment of national celebration.
