UK Snow Bomb Set to Last Three Days with Four English Counties in the Crosshairs

A powerful snow event is expected to blanket parts of the UK over three days, with the heaviest snowfall forecasted for the early hours of Saturday, December 6. According to WX Charts, which analyzes MetDesk data and uses the GFS modelling system, snow will likely affect several regions from Friday, December 5, through Sunday, December 7.

In England, Northumberland, County Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire are forecasted to face the most significant snowfall. Meanwhile, key Scottish counties anticipated to experience snow include Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland, Angus, Perth and Kinross, and Stirling.

Following a disruptive Monday filled with challenging weather conditions, the week ahead promises to remain unsettled. Low-pressure systems will continue to influence the forecast, bringing a mixture of rain, showers, and occasional sunny spells. The Met Office warns of ongoing variability in weather throughout the week.

James Madden from Exacta Weather explains that overnight and early-day heavy rain showers are moving eastwards, crossing Ireland and affecting northern and western parts of the UK. These intense showers could lead to localized flash flooding before easing midday. Additionally, hail or heavy hail accompanied by windy conditions is possible in some regions.

Madden adds that parts of northern Scotland can expect northern high ground snowfall into Monday night and early Tuesday, further extending the snowy conditions.

The Met Office’s Chief Forecaster, Rebekah Hicks, highlights that heavy rain will spread over south Wales from late Sunday into Monday, especially affecting higher ground with potential rainfall totals of 100-120mm. Meanwhile, 60-80mm is expected over hilly areas within the Amber warning region. Lower-lying areas are predicted to receive around 20-40mm of rain.

Widespread yellow rain warnings have been issued for the southwest and northwest of England, central and northern Wales, and southwest Scotland. These warnings indicate possible travel disruptions and other impacts due to heavy rainfall throughout Monday.
