UK Households Urged to Relocate Routers Away from Bluetooth Devices

UK households are being advised to position their Wi-Fi routers away from everyday Bluetooth devices to improve internet performance. Devices like Amazon Alexa, Google Home speakers, wireless earphones, and Bluetooth speakers are now fixtures in many British homes. However, these Bluetooth devices and Wi-Fi routers operate on similar radio frequencies, and placing them too close together can cause interference that slows down your internet speeds.

According to the Institute of Physics, Bluetooth technology is a wireless system that connects devices, such as computers and mobile phones, when in close proximity. One device typically acts as the “main unit” (like a phone), while others—such as headphones or speakers—serve as “peripherals.”

Wi-Fi routers can also be disrupted by household items such as fridges, microwaves, fishbowls, mirrors, and baby monitors. Ensuring the router’s vents are unobstructed can help maintain a strong signal.

To check if Bluetooth interference is affecting your Wi-Fi, try disabling Bluetooth on your smartphone temporarily and see if your internet performance improves. Simply swipe down on your iPhone or Android device and tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off.

Virgin Media highlights that slow internet can stem from multiple devices connecting simultaneously to the same Wi-Fi network, resulting in network congestion. Additionally, poor router placement—like being hidden behind furniture or positioned far from frequently used devices—can weaken signal strength and cause unstable connections.

Taking steps such as relocating your router away from Bluetooth gadgets and placing it in an open, central area can help optimize your home internet experience.
