UK Foreign Office Issues ‘Once in a Generation’ Storm Warning for Australia Amid Severe Flooding

Australia is currently facing catastrophic weather as a “once in a generation” storm unleashes unprecedented rainfall, prompting a danger-to-life warning across multiple states. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, and other major cities are experiencing severe flooding, leading to widespread traffic chaos and significant safety concerns.

Meteorologists report that a tropical low-pressure system has dumped between 100 and 300mm of rain over the past 24 hours on regions from Cairns to Townsville, with expectations of even heavier rainfall to come. Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore from the Bureau of Meteorology highlighted the potential for hundreds more millimeters as tropical cyclones could develop off the coast of Western Australia and in the Coral Sea.

“Flood watches stretch from Darwin down to Melbourne,” Narramore explained. “Many areas in outback South Australia, New South Wales, and northwestern Victoria have already received rainfall volumes equivalent to six to twelve months in just a few days. Northern Victoria and western New South Wales saw 50 to 100mm in a single day.”

This extreme influx of rain equates to some regions receiving a year’s worth of precipitation in a short span, posing a serious risk of flooding. The Northern Territory, Queensland, western New South Wales, and northern Victoria remain on high alert as heavy rains persist along the tropical north coast.

The UK Foreign Office has urged British tourists to remain vigilant during their travels. Their advisory emphasizes the unpredictable nature of severe weather events such as flash floods and tropical cyclones, urging visitors to heed local flood warnings and respect any stay-at-home or evacuation orders issued by Australian authorities.

Senior meteorologist Rob Sharpe of Sky News described the event as “the most intense rainfall in over a decade,” warning that “the heaviest rain since 2011 is expected across multiple regions.”

As emergency services manage ongoing flood threats, residents and visitors are advised to prioritize safety and stay updated with the latest weather alerts.
