UK Faces Weeks of Heatwaves in a ‘Warmer Than Average’ and Hot, Dry Summer

The UK is set to experience several weeks of heatwaves amid a “hot and dry” summer forecast, say meteorologists. After an exceptional end to May, the Netweather TV meteorological team has shared their outlook for the coming months.

Nick Finnis, from Netweather TV, highlighted that warm conditions are expected to return in the latter half of June. Although June may start unsettled with cooler temperatures and above-average rainfall, it will gradually become drier and warmer.

Looking at July and August, July is predicted to be “warmer than average” with a mix of settled dry spells and intermittent unsettled weather, particularly over the southwest. Finnis noted that weather patterns will likely bring higher pressure over regions like Iceland and southern Europe, producing warm conditions with occasional disturbances.

August, however, is forecast to be the hottest and driest month of the summer so far. The meteorological team expects a strong high-pressure system dominating southern UK and eastward areas, resulting in prolonged heat and dry conditions. While some unsettled weather could occur, especially in western parts, these spells are expected to be brief compared to the mostly dry and settled periods.

The Met Office echoes this outlook in its June forecast, indicating that the beginning of the month will see fine and dry conditions with mostly light winds and temperatures above normal. However, as the month progresses, low pressure is likely to influence southern regions, increasing the chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms. Heatwaves are also expected to develop, particularly in the south.

A comprehensive summer forecast is scheduled for release in the first week of June, but current indications point to a season marked by warmth, dryness, and intermittent heatwaves across the UK.
