UK Faces Two Snow Events Back-to-Back as Harsh Winter Persists

The UK is bracing for two significant snow events in rapid succession, prolonging an already severe winter season. Forecasters at WX Charts predict that as many as 90 counties could be covered in snow, with some areas experiencing accumulations of up to 72cm.

A snow forecast map for 9am on January 28 shows central Scotland receiving around 26cm of snow, with light flurries spreading across much of the country. Another wave of snow is expected to arrive by January 31, intensifying wintry conditions.

The heaviest snowfall will largely affect Scotland, particularly the Cairngorms National Park, where up to 72cm of snow could accumulate. However, not all areas will be equally impacted. Some regions, including parts of Hampshire and Devon in England, are expected to remain largely snow-free, as indicated by grey zones on the maps signifying minimal snowfall risk.

Temperatures are forecast to drop significantly, with Stirling, Scotland, potentially seeing lows of -9°C. National reports describe the upcoming snow as merciless, forecasting coverage stretching from England’s southern coast to Scotland’s northernmost points.

Looking ahead, the BBC forecast highlights two possible scenarios for the coming week. One is a continuation of unsettled yet relatively mild weather. More likely, however, is the establishment of high pressure over Scandinavia and the Urals. This system could push Atlantic weather fronts away and draw colder air over the UK from eastern Europe, introducing southeasterly to easterly winds and leading to sporadic wintry showers.

While this colder trend seems probable and may start by the weekend, the precise timing remains uncertain. This developing pattern promises to extend the challenging winter conditions across the UK.
