UK Faces Imminent Diesel Shortage as Experts Warn of Supply Crisis

A looming diesel shortage in the UK has been forecast by energy expert Ashley Kelty of investment bank Panmure Liberum, who criticizes the Labour government for downplaying the threat. While petrol supplies are expected to hold steady, Kelty warns that diesel scarcity could begin by late April due to disruptions stemming from the continuing chaos in the Gulf.

“The Government has been coy because it doesn’t want to trigger panic buying,” Kelty told The i Paper, “but the situation is definitely quite perilous.”

Adding to the concern, Ellen Fraser from consultancy Baringa suggests implementing “sensible measures” such as work-from-home policies to ease demand. Richard Smith, representing the Road Haulage Association, stresses the need for a “clear plan” to ensure the uninterrupted transport of goods across the country.

Colin Smith of the Scottish Wholesale Association emphasizes that food and drink distributors must receive “priority access” to fuel to prevent supply chain disruptions.

In response, the Labour government insists it is preparing for all outcomes. Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesperson confirmed, “We will always plan for all eventualities,” while Downing Street reassures the public that petrol stations remain “well-stocked nationally” and dismisses claims to the contrary.

Adam Bell, a former government adviser and Stonehaven partner, predicts that if current conflicts persist, the government may soon implement “volume measures” or rationing to manage fuel supply. He told Times Radio that such steps could be announced by mid-April.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Starmer highlighted the importance of collaboration between business and government to shield citizens from rising energy and fuel costs. “The Government can’t do it on its own. You can’t do it on your own. We’re going to have to work together on this,” he said.

With tensions escalating overseas and supply chains under strain, the UK faces a critical challenge in securing essential diesel supplies to keep the economy moving.
