The UK is on the brink of a severe winter weather event, with forecasts indicating widespread heavy snowfall and a sharp plunge in temperatures. Weather maps reveal that the entire country could soon be blanketed in snow, with some areas expecting accumulations exceeding 70cm.
After a brief period of milder conditions, temperatures are set to dip dramatically towards the end of January. Meteorologists warn that a series of low pressure systems will descend from the north and west, bringing unsettled weather as cold Arctic air collides with moist Atlantic currents.
This dynamic is expected to trigger two powerful blizzards during the final week of January. WXCharts projections for January 31 show heavy snow stretching from northern Scotland down to the southern coast. Scotland itself could see up to 71cm of snow, while northern England might face as much as 24cm.

The snowfall will initially impact northern areas, gradually pushing southwards. Alongside the snow, sub-zero temperatures are forecast across the UK. On January 30, Scotland could experience a bitter chill of -14°C, with no region expected to rise above freezing.
The Met Office highlights an “increased chance” of temperatures falling further after an initial cold snap in the North East. Between January 22 and 31, the UK will be caught in a tug-of-war between warmer air masses arriving from the Atlantic and high-pressure, frigid conditions pushing in from the east.
Early in this period, milder air will likely dominate, bringing cloudy skies and scattered showers, particularly in western regions. However, as colder air takes hold, there is a growing likelihood of widespread freezing temperatures and snow showers across many parts of the country. While some uncertainty remains in the forecast, the key takeaway is that harsh winter conditions are poised to grip the UK, with significant snowfall and record lows expected.
